Rachel Portesi’s Hair Portraits explore agency through the Victorian memento mori tradition. Emerging from the disorientation of motherhood and aging, the series confronts the self that no longer remains intact. Using hair (tied to intimacy, memory, and mourning), Portesi creates portraits that act as small memorials to past selves. The images mark moments of transition: what is shed, what endures, and what begins anew. Through wet plate collodion tintype and film, she shapes sculptural compositions where subjects mirror her evolving identity, offering a quiet, reflective view of change and continuity.
